Pink eye which is often referred to as conjunctivitis is the result of tenderness of the membrane covering the white portion of your eyes and the inside layer of your eye lids. In most of the cases, pink eye is not a danger to eyesight when it is attended timely with the required treatment. But when it is not treated on time then there are chances of permanent eye damage or vision loss. In extreme cases there might be need to remove the infected eye because the infection has spread in its interior.
This is called as endophthalmitis. It is therefore important to find out the cause of pink eye and seek the treatment at the earliest. Pink eye is the mostly caused by bacteria, virus and allergies. Bacterial and viral causes of conjunctivitis can be contagious. It can even be caused due to chemical irritants or some other things.
It is important to use cold compresses, antibiotics and over the counter eye drops as per the doctor’s advice in case of bacterial pink eye infection. And in case of allergic infections, antihistamines can be used to get relief. It is important to keep your eyes clean and use good quality eye cosmetics.
