How Does Coccidioidomycosis Affect the Lungs?

Coccidioidomycosis, better known as valley fever, is a disease caused by the infestation of the fungus called Coccidioides immitis or simply C. Rich preserves of this fungus is mostly found in wet soil and dust which initially manifests in the form of molds with large filaments. These large filaments then break down to form the airborne micro-organisms called spores, especially at the onset of rainy seasons. The spores are swept into the environment via the displacement of soil through wind or farming activities. People working in the farms or places laden with air polluted with spores, easily inhale these spores and allow them an entry into their respiratory tracts.

These harmful organisms then trespass into the inner regions of the lungs and cause severe lesions. At times lung nodules start developing which gives rise to troubles in breathing. Such people experience breathing problems like interrupted breathing, shortness of breath, breath gasping and much more. The disseminated form of Coccidioidomycosis can prove to be devastating for a person. This form triggers the development of ulcers in the respiratory tracts, mouth and on skin. It leads to the progression of severe form of pneumonia which turns the person’s life miserable. It can also cause acute meningitis, urinary tract problem and severe pain in the joints.
