What is Cryptococcosis?

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease caused by Cryptococcus neoformans. It can lead to serious symptoms in a few people. Some people don’t get sick because of this. But those who get affected sometimes face chronic symptoms like dizziness, headache and brain and spinal cord disease. Cryptococcus neoformans is actually there in the droppings of few birds like pigeon. It is an encapsulated fungal pathogen which can cause life threatening infection. When the dropping of wild birds becomes dry and get mixed with the dust in the soil, it can affect human beings by entering through lungs. Cryptococcosis is more common among people who have a weaker immunity. That’s the reason why people who are at a higher risk to get affected are:

Small kids

Infants

HIV/AIDS patients

Patient of cancer

Organ transplant patients

Some of the life threatening symptoms caused by Cryptococcosis are: Asymptomatic, Meningitis, Encephalitis, Meningoencephalitis, swelling of optic disc.
It is worth noting that people who have strong immunity remain unaffected with the symptoms. But people who have a weakened immunity face serious symptoms which can even affect the brain.
