How Does Nocardiosis Affect the Lungs?

Nocardia infection, simply known as the Nocardiosis, is an uncommon disorder that majorly affects all those people who have a weak immune system. The main cause of this disease is the entrance of a harmful bacterium called Nocardia asteroids.

This infection starts spreading from the lung to other parts of the body. The harmful bacteria responsible for the development of the disease are inhaled through respiratory tracts which later become a habitable spot for the growth of bacteria. In the lungs, this deadly micro-organism triggers numerous invasive pulmonary infections that weaken the entire respiratory system of the body. This disease, in the initial stages manifests in form of lung disorders like dry cough, chest pain, troubles in breathing and more. However, in progressive stages, the disease makes it utmost difficult for the sufferer to inhale air. He experiences chronic forms of cough often accompanied by blood and phlegm.

The fungus, if not checked on time plays havoc with the rest of the organs as well. It causes lesions in the membranes of brain and spinal cord which leads to the prevalence of the condition called meningitis. It also severely affects the health of other organs like eyes, heart, kidneys and bones.
