A lot of people actually have toenails plus fingernails that are thick and discolored. It is calucated that at least 50% of the nails are abnormail because of infections that come from fungus with the matrix, nail bedding, and plate nail. The correct word for this is called either tinea unguium or onychomycosis.

Fungas infections is not only known in the United States but can affect other countries and more so the ones that are poor and struggling with money. You would think that women have a higher chance of getting onychomycosis but in reality men often get it after 40 years old and stand at a higher risk for it. Men should be really careful and make sure that they wash clothes and more so if they are outside and work in the sun a lot. Women should be careful if they tan during the summer or outdoors a lot with children.

Treatment for onychomycosis varies depending on if it is either mild or severe. A lot of cases can be treated right away and if it is a mild case it can take around 6-8 weeks for the healing to be complete but if it is a severe case it might take around 3-6 months.
