What is Pink Eye-is this a Fungus Infection?

Pink eye also known as conjunctivitis is identified by redness in the eyes and inflammation seen on the membranes in inner part of eyelids. These are viral or bacterial infections. These membranes have an inbuilt mechanism to fight virus, bacteria, various allergens, toxic agents and irritants.

These membranes are well equipped to fight various other diseases in the body. These viral and bacterial infections are commonly seen in children but can also occur at any age. These infections can either be contagious or noncontiguous but in any case it doesn’t cause much vision changes. Special type of virus responsible for pink eye is Adenoviruses. Common symptoms of pink eye are watery discharge which is neither green nor yellow. This can be accompanied with cold, viral or sinus and running nose.

 Eyelids may swell and seeing bright light may become painful. Even if it may not require antibiotics, one should consult a doctor. Pink eye infection can be associated with the cornea infection. In case of bacterial infection causing pink eye, bacteria namely Staphylococci and Streptococci are most prominent. Bacterial pink eye are known to show symptoms like eye pain, redness, swelling. Pink eye due to bacteria also cause discharge of either green color or yellow color substance.
