Can Q-Tips Cause Fungal Infections in the Ear?

Yes, Q-Tips if not used in the right way can cause fungal ear infection. You must remember that Q-Tips are mainly used to clean the outermost part of the ears. Sticking this into the ear canals can be harmful for eardrums. According to doctors accumulated wax does not cause that much of harm. Using Q-Tips can actually push the wax inside or water after bathing inside.

This can lead to fungal infection. Fungal infection is also a result of scratching caused due to use of Q-Tips within the ear. Sometimes scratching causes discharge in the ears which may make the problem worse and lead to fungal infection. That’s the reason why doctors do not recommend use of Q-Tip for the inner parts of the ears. People may use these sticks inappropriately and may have fungal infection of ears. It is therefore important to keep away from the temptation of putting this stick into your ear. If wax is the problem then it is better to consult your doctor or ENT specialist who knows better options for cleaning the wax. It is better to use professional ways of cleaning your ears rather than settling for Q-Tips. Take the doctor’s advice in this case.
