Who is at Risk for Viral Pneumonia?
|
Pneumonia, the inflammatory condition of lungs and alveoli diminishes oxygen absorbing capacity of our respiratory system. Several micro organisms like bacteria fungus and parasites are responsible for this disorder.
Sometimes, respiratory infections are also a reason behind pneumonia. Depending upon the agent of pneumonia the risk level varies. For example, people with weak immune system are more vulnerable towards viral pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia is caused generally by inhalation of airborne droplets. Infection in another part of body can also cause bacterial pneumonia. The common victims of bacterial pneumonia are children. Studies have found that more than millions of children every year due to bacterial pneumonia.
Lungs of the victim are at the extreme end of risk when attacked by viral pneumonia. The virus causing viral pneumonia reaches lungs through mouth or nose. After reaching the lungs it affects the cell linings inside the lungs and the alveoli causing a massive destruction of inside cells. The cell destruction is compounded when immune system of our body responds to the virus. This virus also affects the white blood cells of the victim. Along with, it makes victim’s body more vulnerable towards bacterial infection and attack. Bacterial pneumonia after viral pneumonia is more complicated to be handled. |
