Can Sepsis be Deadly?

Yes, sepsis is a deadly health complication. According to the studies, it is still a bacterial or fungal blood infection which can be a health threat. Around 18 million cases of sepsis are reported in the United States every year. And every year around 215,000 people die due to this. In United States, sepsis is the 3rd most common cause of death.

It is really a matter of concern because in 20 years, the cases of deaths due to sepsis have nearly doubled. The health care experts are constantly taking efforts to bring this problem under control. Sepsis is a body’s response to the infection. The infection can be viral, bacterial or fungal. Fungal and bacterial infections are far more dangerous as compared to viral infection. Sepsis is deadly health complication because it can lead to multiple organ failure, death, renal dysfunction etc. It is important to seek treatment when the symptoms come into picture.

Some of the symptoms that indicate sepsis in a patient are fever, chills, low blood pressure, immense pain in joints, rapid heartbeat, skin rashes, decreased urine output and skin discoloration etc. Sepsis is deadly because if not treated timely, it can be responsible for multiple organ failure or even death. Treating a patient can be exceedingly expensive.
