Sepsis can be diagnosed using the following tests:
Blood culture: This test reveals the bacterial infection
Blood gases: This test reveals the presence of acidosis
Kidney function test: If this test shows that there is something abnormal, action can be taken.
Platelet count: If the platelet count is lower than the normal range sepsis can be suspected.
White blood cell: This count can be higher or lower.
Sepsis is a serious complication which must be diagnosed at the earliest so that proper treatment can be done. The above diagnosis can be confirmed with bacterial identification in a culture grown from blood smear. However, this test won’t be completely perfect if the person is on antibiotics. Sepsis can be caused either by bacterial, fungal or parasitic infection. However, in most of the cases, the infection is bacterial. And due to this infection there might be complications which can be life threatening. That’s the reason why people who have sepsis have to be admitted in the hospital. And on suspecting this problem, broad spectrum intravenous antibiotic therapy is recommended. The treatment needs to be fast, effective and aggressive. Only then only there will be complete recovery. |
