How Serious Is Coccidioidomycosis?

Coccidioidomycosis is a serious disease caused by the unwanted invasion of the micro-organism called Coccidioides immitis. The transmission of this fungus into the human body takes place through inhalation. It is a misconception that this fungus can spread from one human to another via direct skin contact. In majority cases, this disease causes minor symptoms like cold, dry cough, fever, chest pain etc.

However, if the condition remains unchecked, it can easily spread to the skin, joints, bones, lungs and the central nervous system. In serious form, the disease triggers serious lung disorders like pneumonia, severe cough, bronchitis, pulmonary hypertension, lung inflammation, blood coughs and more. It can further destroy the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and lead to a medical condition known as meningitis.

In this condition, the person suffers from acute high fever, headaches, nausea and more. The biggest threat of the disease is the multiplication of the fungus inside the body. Forms of bone infections are one of most dreadful outcomes of the spread of fungus. This disease, in its severe stage, can make the bones weak and hollow which leads to the condition called osteoporosis. Further, it can suppress the growth of the bones and make them extremely thin to support the mass weight of the body.
