How is Swimmers Ear Diagnosed?

In most of the cases, swimmer’s ear is easily diagnosed with the aid of a physical examination conducted by a practitioner. He thoroughly examines the insides of the ear, especially the canal region, to look for the relative symptoms that would confirm the progression of the disease.

Symptoms like rashes, redness or any other form of skin lesions, signs of skin inflammation, swelling and mild-to moderate levels of pain in the ear and drainage of the fluid from the ear, confirm the presence of this infection. Further, he may ask questions pertaining to the medical history of the suffering person in order to get a better picture of his ailment. The doctor uses a special instrument called otoscope in order to conduct an internal examination of the ear. With the help of this specialized medical tool, the doctor is easily able to detect swelling, redness and other evident signs of this infection.

Further, the health care provider may also test the drainage with a microscope in order to confirm the bacterial or fungal infestation. This will help the doctor to prescribe the ant-bacterial or anti-fungal medicines accordingly. In cases, when the above mentioned tests fail to confirm this infection, x-rays and blood tests can be conducted at last.
