What are the Symptoms of Cryptococcosis?

Yeast cryptococcus neoformans leads to cryptococcosis infection. This disease is rare among people who have a strong immune system. People who have a low immunity or compromised immunity are more prone to this disease. Here is the detailed information about symptoms of cryptococcosis:

  • Asymptomatic: This term means that the infection which does not show any symptoms even though there might be infection.
  • Meningitis: Meningitis refers to inflammation of meninges. Meninges mean the membrane which covers spinal cord and brain. This is rare but is dangerous.
  • Encephalitis: This is inflammation of brain.
  • Meningoencephalitis: This is inflammation of meninges and brain.
  • Pneumonia: This is chronic lung infection.

Apart from this other common symptoms of cryptococcosis are headache, confusion, nausea, chest pain, behavioral changes, irritability, swelling of optic disc, swollen glands, Vision blurredness, cough, fever etc. When such symptoms occur it is important to take it seriously. One of the complications of cryptococcosis can be death. Thus it is vital to confirm the symptoms with right diagnosis. This will help to treat the infection in the earlier stage itself. This is an opportunistic infection which can either crash the respiratory system and/or can spread to non-pulmonary tissues of the body and cause chronic health complications.
